Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 600 lbs. sold 5.00-8.00 lower, steers over 600 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 lower, and heifers over 600 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 higher. There was some instances of course that didn't fit the overall trend but as a whole feeders, especially the calves which are making up the majority of the offering are selling at lower prices. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy. Many producers are continued to bring calves to town earlier than usual as prices remain good even if they aren't at the same levels as a few weeks ago. Large if not huge runs of cows came to auctions this week as farmers look to conserve grass in any way they can. Moods are more optimistic as this week begins as rains have finally fallen for most everyone in the state. Although amounts varied and cells have been spotty nearly everyone has received some the last week. Issues of dryness and short grass do not just go away overnight however and no one wants to push short pastures before summer actually arrives. Although not as impressive as the last few weeks a few of the top end of sales included a load of 621 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center which sold at 241.25. A load of 720 lb. steers sold at Ozark Regional Stockyards brought 223.50 and a two load sale of 168 head of 832 lb. steers sold at Kingsville Livestock Auction for 208.85. The top five weight steers was a small draft of 10 head of 514 lb. steers at Tina Livestock Auction which brought 290.00. Most of the better five weights are falling in the mid 270.00's as anything with a 3 in front doesn't seem to exist anymore. Boxed beef cutouts continued to the downward trend this week. Choice closed at 304.61, down 4.58 and select closed at 284.68, down 3.48 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was just near 77K head, this marks nearly a month of consecutive weeks with disappointing sales. Live sales were reported from 170.00-176.00 and dressed sales 280.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8398 head with a weighted average weight of 532.45 lbs. and a price value of 247.35, 5.72 lower than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 31.97.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
