Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a light supply of feeders, due to a holiday shortened week, sold sharply higher with many classes and weights 10.00-15.00 higher and some spots of even stronger. Only about half of the barns held sales this week while many of the early week auctions remained dark. Mid-week markets, both cash and futures, unexpectedly just exploded and caught everyone off guard and just kept climbing as the week progressed. Cash prices in the auction barns still aren't at the record levels set back in 2014-15 but have climbed close enough that the possibility of surpassing those levels doesn't seem out of the question any more. Some notable drafts from this week included 28 head of 457 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Auction which sold for 310.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold 34 head of 612 lb. steers for 288.00. Mo-Kan Livestock Market sold 43 head of 705 lb. steers for 237.60. A load of 826 lb. steers at New Cambria Livestock Auction sold at 223.00 and a half load of 918 lb. steers brought 219.50. Although the supply of feeders was light this week due to the holiday, receipts each week continue to be well above seasonal averages. Over 80 percent of the state is now showing on the drought monitor and many producers continue to market calves early as prices levels and lack of feed provide no incentive to try to hold on. Many producers are also culling a few extra cows from the herds in hopes of keeping a little more grass. Hay harvest thus far has been disappointing with many saying yields are about half of last year's disappointing hay harvest. Prices for cull cows and bulls is also quite high with many weight up cows bringing over a buck a pound and those with some fact cover and higher dressing percentages pushing into the high 120's to low 130's. Boxed beef cutouts closed higher for the week. Choice closed at 309.93, up 6.00 and select closed at 290.93, up 6.01 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled 83 head. Fed cattle prices were sharply higher as true fundamental factors of supply, or lack of, and good demand shot prices to all time new record highs. Live sales were reported from 175.00-180.00 in the south and 178.00-188.00 with some late week at 190.00 in the north. Dressed sales in the north ranged from 285.00-292.50. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3421 head with a weighted average weight of 536.33 lbs. and a price value of 269.13, 12.44 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 30.17.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
