Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. Most of the market advance was seen on the lighter grazing type cattle, generally under 650 lbs. The supply of feeders was moderate and demand remains good to very good. The state once again received some rain adding to the mud but rain makes grass and after last summer no one really wants to complain. The state was spared from the heavy snows that went across the northern plains leaving snow that was measured in feet in several areas. As February wraps up there are plenty of signs spring is on the way some concern that maybe it is too early as we know late freezes and winter weather are still more than a likely possibility. Highlights this week were plentiful with it hard to pick what was most impressive and by no means were these necessarily the top highest prices but as far as sizeable drafts go at least for the psychological factor one has to start with 39 head of 313 lb. steers that sold at Joplin Regional Stockyards for 303.00 marking the first sizeable draft to break the three dollars a pound mark. Windsor Livestock Auction had several impressive drafts this week including 19 head of 543 lb. steers at 251.00 and 55 head of 617 lb. steers at 226.50. On the bigger end, Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 22 head of 712 lb. steers at 198.75 and Callaway Livestock Market sold 110 head of 929 lb. steers for 174.75. If that isn't enough to make a feller say wow there was several drafts of heifers that sold at prices which just a couple of months ago would have seemed high for steers. Two of which included 75 head of 564 lb. heifers at Windsor Livestock Auction which sold 218.00 and finally to wrap up F & T Livestock Market sold 70 head of 771 lb. heifers going to feed for 189.50. Boxed beef cutouts continue to climb, Friday's closes were the highest Friday close in since January of 2022. Choice closed the week at 287.28, up 6.24 and select closed at 277.09, up 11.20 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 57K head. Once again this week deals were slow to develop and as of the final report Friday afternoon little to no trade had taken place in the southern plains. In the north live sales were reported from 164.00-166.00 and dressed sales mostly 260.00-262.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8819 head with a weighted average weight of 544.16 lbs. and a price value of 219.62, 2.76 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 27.38.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
