Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher, with instances of 10.00 higher on the lighter weights suitable for grazing. The supply of feeders was on the lower side of moderate and demand was good to very good. Heavy rains mid- week resulted in some flooding in the southern part of the state where the already saturated ground couldn't soak up the two to three inches that came in areas of the Ozarks. Temperatures climbed in to the low 70's over the weekend and several signs of spring are showing around the state, but as we all know that can change in a matter of minutes and the state could easily be under several inches of snow in no time. However an early spring with an abundance of grass and pastures would most assuredly be welcomed by all. Load lots of calves under 700 lbs. were fairly uncommon this week although there were still several parts loads in the offering, a few loads of heavier weights were present. Some highlights of the more sizeable drafts this week included 21 head of 510 lb. steers as South Central Regional Stockyards which sold at 255.00, 27 head of 627 lb. steers sold at Green City Livestock Market for 230.50, 46 head of 705 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Action at 207.00, Green City Livestock Market also sold a load of 797 lb. steers at 191.50, and finally two loads of 867 lb. steers sold at Callaway Livestock Center at 183.75. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week. Choice closed the week at 289.32, up 2.04 and select closed at 276.86, down 0.23 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 71K head. Most trade once again waiting until Friday to develop live sales were reported from 164.00-166.00 and dressed sales 262.00-265.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 5711 head with a weighted average weight of 538.28 lbs. and a price value of 227.60, 7.98 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 32.45.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
