Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady to 3.00 higher. The market continues an overall uptrend but not at as swift of a pace as was seen a couple of weeks ago. Lighter overall offerings this week and even a few cases of lower prices as some auctions did not see the extreme tops as last week. Most of this was due to the type of cattle seen. Condition is the main factor for buyers as they are set on filling orders for grazers. When condition also meets with some high quality and a little flash prices can really get high. As supplies become tighter many of those fancy types have already been marketed however so obtaining those extreme market tops gets a bit harder. Mud has also been a factor as not everyone has been able to get in and out with trailers currently and getting stuck is really easy to do by midmorning or afternoon once temperatures climb a little. Load and multi load lots were very limited this week, but smaller part to half load lots of 20-30 head were way more abundant than in a typical week. Historically markets in the north typically average a little stronger prices than the south. Some claim the cattle are better, some say it is bigger farmers with larger offerings, some say it's because the corn guys in Iowa and Nebraska have more money to spend, and some say it is strictly due to shorter distances for delivery, whatever the reason historically it is usually true. That general assumption has been thrown out the window the last couple of months though as southern sales have seen very little to no geographic discount and in some cases outselling the northern cattle. Joplin Regional Stockyards had a barn burner this week and claimed several of the notable sales which included 144 head of 830 lb. steers sold for 186.10, 65 head of 716 lb. steers brought 200.75, and 86 head of 600 lb. steers tagged as fancy sold for 226.50. A couple of smaller part loads that were also quite impressive included as draft at New Cambria Livestock Auction of 26 head of 511 lb. steers which climbed to 254.00 before the hammer dropped. Finally to wrap up this week 26 head of 608 lb. steers at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market for 222.50. Boxed beef cutouts made strong gains this week. Choice closed the week at 281.04, up 11.38 and select closed at 265.89, up 11.60 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 66K head. Once again this week deals were slow to develop with most of the trade taking place on Friday. As of last report Friday afternoon very little trade had been reported KS or TX as those mangers have continued to stand firm the last few weeks until packers have been forced to give in and pay more to fill their needs. Most of the sales that made the final afternoon report were in the north with from 160.00-162.00 and dressed sales mostly 257.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6883 head with a weighted average weight of 548.03 lbs. and a price value of 216.86, 2.39 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 27.97.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
