Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. Some auctions early in the week quoted higher trends as they didn't quite see the full gain of the market last week like many of the later week sales did. The supply was moderate to heavy as winter weather wasn't really a factor with transportation this week, although mud is making it difficult for many to get around feeding and possibly preventing a few cattle from getting to town. Heavier offerings with more diversity pulled a few of the overall averages on calf weights down a bit but by no means really a reflection of any lower market. Demand is good to very good. Order buyers are out in full force currently trying to make sure they have enough cattle to fill pastures when grass arrives. The big jump in the market since the start of the year has producers leaving barns with a smiles and lots of talk about will we see record prices again. Of course there is no way to know that and the market still has a ways to go to get to 2014 levels. Even if those levels are reached the situation currently is much different as corn, fuel and other input prices are generally twice as high as when the cattle market reached record levels in 2014 so profits sure won't be the same. A few of couple of notable sales picked from a long list of choices included 110 head of 488 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction which sold at 254.25 and 164 head of 812 lb. steers at Tina Livestock Market which sold at 187.75. For the entire state over 1800 head of 600-650 lb. steers in Medium and Large 1 class had an average of just a few cents over 205.00. The last notable for this week is the price of slaughter cows that has also climbed sharply, with many cull cows selling in the 90's and some breaking into the over a dollar a pound level. Boxed beef cutouts finally found some strength this week and closed higher. Choice closed the week at 269.66, up 4.92 and select closed at 254.29, up 2.68 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 72K head with likely a bit more business taking place after the final reporting time. Live sales were reported from 158.00-160.00 with a few up to 161.00 and dressed sales mostly 254.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8452 head with a weighted average weight of 551.35 lbs. and a price value of 214.47, 0.40 lower than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 28.01.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
