Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate as weather still impacted movement in some areas. Demand was moderate to good with mid-weights in suitable condition to eat grass and gain weight seeing the best demand which is very typical of this time of year. Regardless of weights however, quality cattle with good health programs still fetch quality checks. A load of steers sold on Tuesday at the Kingsville Livestock auction averaging 801 lbs. sold at 162.60, and although this load just squeaked into the 8 weights it has been a full month since anything with an 8 in front got into the 160’s. Another notable as a whole across the state that we just don’t talk enough about is the price of cull cows and bulls, which are at very high levels. Not that the industry needs to lose any more momma cows, but there is no doubt a few are leaving the farms maybe a bit sooner than they would if price levels were lower. Higher quality slaughter cows are reaching into the 90’s with a few high dressing cows hitting 100.00 per cwt. High dressing slaughter bulls have climbed into the mid 130’s. Switching gears to grains, USDA released the planting intentions report this week, and although it is based off data as of March 1, corn is expected to lose its’ crown as king of the crops to soybeans. Projections expect a 4% decrease in corn acres with beans gaining that same 4%, and although history has shown these are just estimates and many factors such as prices and mainly weather will still result in some acres shuffling one way or the other the estimated difference is large enough to fill fairly confident that beans will rule this year; which is a rare occurrence and not one that the cattleman really cares to see. Although the week ended with sunshine and decent temperatures many areas of the state did see some frost mid-week and even some snow flurries and sleet. Mud continues to be present and there was some flooding in the southern part of the state but, field conditions are improving slightly in areas and few farmers did manage to pick and choose spots and get a little work done this week. As of current no reports of any corn in the ground but, someone will be first very soon. Boxed beef cutout values continue the trend upward as each day gets closer to seeing more grills fire up. Choice closed on Friday at 2678.17, up 4.50 and select closed at 262.52, up 10.38 compared to the previous week. As of Friday afternoon reported negotiated feedlot sales were just under 91K head. Live sales for the week were mostly from 138.00-143.00 and dressed sales from 221.00-222.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4652 head with a weighted average weight of 535.17 lbs. and a price value of 191.95, up 1.14 from the previous week. The steer/ heifer spread is currently 31.07.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
