Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifer calves sold mostly steady with some spots of up to 5.00 higher on some lighter weight calves. Yearlings didn’t see some of the extreme tops of last week, but like types and kinds sold near steady. Feeder supply was moderate with many barns not seeing the types of numbers they generally expect due to rains and extremely sloppy conditions in the country making it difficult to load and haul. The monthly Cattle on Feed report was released on Friday. Although numbers in all three categories were within the range of pre report estimates, they were all towards the very top end of the ranges. Placements were reported at 109 percent of last year, but to get the full picture one has to recall the extreme prolonged cold that swept over the nation in Feb. of 2021 which completely closed many auctions for two full weeks. On feed numbers were reported at 101 percent and Marketings at 105 percent. Boxed beef cutouts climbed a bit more this week as grilling season nears and demand should increase. Choice closed on Friday at 262.64, up 4.48 and select at 252.14, up 1.49 compared to the previous week. As of Friday afternoon just under 91K head of negotiated feedlot sales were reported. Live sales were from 138.00-142.00, enough late week sales at the 142.00 which should make the weighted average a touch higher for the week. Dressed sales were from 220.00-221.00 with a few up 225.00, mostly 221.00 which would be near steady with the previous week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4839 head with a weighted average weight of 535.36 lbs. and a price value of 190.81, 1.26 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
