Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 3.00 lower. The supply of feeders was moderate, although reporters in several locations noted overall quality was lower than has been seen in the previous weeks and offerings were made up of many more unweaned new crop type of calves carrying a bit more flesh than what buyers of grass cattle prefer. Demand was moderate but again discounts are being applied to those cattle that won't go to grass and take to gaining in a hurry. Weather continues to be a rollercoaster as the season's transition. Some areas saw some light snow last week along with heavy frost and freezing temperatures that were followed up by a big warm up that got into the 80's over the weekend. Thus far there has been very little field work done this spring a few days here and there has allowed limited tillage or but planting hasn't been enough be measured thus far. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week with choice closing on Friday at 270.47, up 3.33 and select at 260.33, down 2.19 compared to last week. As of Friday afternoon negotiated feedlot volume for the week was just over 95K head. Most of the trade occurred on Monday and Tuesday this past week. Live sales were reported from 137.00-140.00 and dressed sales mostly at 222.00. If realized livestock slaughter for the week, 676,000, will be the 3rd largest week since 2011. Both of the top two largest weeks occurred in the fourth quarter of 2021. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4816 head with a weighted average weight of 529.70 lbs. and a price value of 189.97, 1.98 lower than last week. The steer heifer spread is currently 29.90.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
