Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with several load lots of yearling steers over 750 lbs. selling up to 8.00 higher. The calf market started the week off strong following the monthly cattle on feed report which was considered quite bullish. Feeder Cattle Futures failed to provide much support however, and auction prices were a bit softer by mid to late week especially on the big calves in the 6-7 weight range. Rains fell across the state and much of the nation last week. This brought grain harvest to a halt but should help add demand for grazing type cattle to turn out on wheat pasture. Over 50 full pot loads of yearlings went through the barns around the state this week. A couple of highlights included 341 head of 878 lb. steers which sold at MO-KAN Livestock Market on Thursday for 164.75 and at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market on Tuesday a 64 head load lot of 823 lb. steers sold for 168.75. Boxed beef cutouts closed slightly higher for the week. Choice closed at 285.72, up 3.90 and select at 263.37, up 0.26 compared to the previous week. Feedlot trade was active this week with the largest weekly negotiated volume since early April. As of Friday afternoon near 103K head were reported with live sales mostly 126.00-127.00 and dressed sales at mostly 200.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3482 head with a weighted average weight of 543.96 lbs. and a price value of 165.83, 2.71 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
