Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 4.00 higher, although there was a few spots where markets struggled to find steady money on some of the cattle viewed as higher health risk. Supply was moderate, far fewer loads of big yearlings this week but there was several more loads of lighter 5 and 6 weight calves in the offering. Demand was moderate to good. Below average temperatures brought a few nights of frost which should slow some of the health issues of the unweaned bawling calves but those swings are not quite over yet and some buyers still not willing to take the risk. A couple of highlights this week was 152 head of 908 lb. steers which sold on Monday at Joplin Regional Stockyards for 156.50 or just over $1400.00 per head. Another load of 61 head of 707 lb. steers sold on Thursday at New Cambria Livestock Market for 177.50. Box beef cutouts climbed a bit more this week, choice closed on Friday at 289.54, up 3.82 and select at 267.52, up 4.15 compared to the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales totaled just over 90K head as of the Friday afternoon report. Feedlot managers really dug their heels in this week holding out for more money and those that held out till late week were able to accomplish that. Live sales were reported mostly in the 127.00-132.00 range and dressed sales from 202.00-204.00 with all of the highest prices payed late week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6057 head with a weighted average weight of 549.05 lbs. and a price value of 165.47, 0.36 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
