Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers unevenly steady with the unweaned calves bringing discounts again this week. Supply moderate with demand moderate for weaned and worked cattle, but light to moderate for unweaned bawling calves. Temperature swings have started up, making buyers more conscious of programs and body condition. Wheat is coming up and the warm days with rain made it shoot up last week. Cattle going on the wheat and rye has been sought after and bringing a premium, if they were the right kind. October’s cattle on feed report was released on Friday, showing bullish data. On feed was at 98.6 percent of last year’s inventory at 11,550,000 head. The average industry guess was at 99.3 percent. This was the second highest inventory for October 1, since the series began in 1996. Placements in feedlots came in at 97.1 percent, with the average industry guess at 101.2 percent. Placements on feed during September totaled 2,163,000 head. Marketings totaled 1,789,000 head, 96.9 percent of last year’s inventory. The average industry guess was at 97.3 percent. Friday’s estimated slaughter report showed 661,000 head of cattle for the week, bringing the year-to-date slaughter at 26,938,000 head. This is 822,000 head more than where we were a year ago. In feedlot trade, live cash prices stayed mostly steady at 124.00 and dressed mostly steady at 196.00. There was about 70,000 head negotiated cash and about 48,000 head negotiated grid. Boxed beef seemed to have found a bottom, but have been trading mostly sideways and making only incremental changes each day. Choice and Select closed on Friday at 281.82, 1.58 higher and 263.11, 2.49 higher, respectively. Monday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 4279 head with a weighted average weight of 547.27 lbs and a price value of 163.12, 0.62 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
