Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers unevenly steady with unweaned calves bringing several dollars cheaper than their weaned, program counterparts. Buyers showed more interest in cattle to graze on wheat this fall and winter. Fall-like temperatures came through the state late week after the cold front and rain, putting more pressure on unweaned, bawling calves. However, low temperatures are still well above freezing and no frost has been seen yet. In feedlot trade, negotiated live cash sales stuck in the 123.00-124.00 range, with a few head at 125.00. Last week’s WASDE report showed a projection of an overall decline in red meat and poultry production in 2021. This month’s overall projection was decreased due to lower pork, broiler, and turkey forecasts, but with a higher beef production forecast. Boxed beef cutouts found a bottom this week and closed higher on Thursday and Friday, closing the week out at 281.29, at 3.03 lower, and 261.48, at 2.12 lower, for Choice and Select, respectively. Monday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 1997 head with a weighted average weight of 542.38 lbs. and a price value of 163.74, 1.99 lower than last Monday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
