Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers under 800 lbs. sold mostly 5.00 higher with some instances of 10.00 higher on those under 600 lbs., steers over 800 lbs. sold mostly steady. Feeder heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate. A few more load lots in the offering this week with over 40 full loads sold at barns around the state. Four loads of heavy eight weight steers at different locations sold from 153.50-154.75. Demand was moderate. A little moisture in some of the wheat areas might have been responsible for some of the uptick on the light weight calves, as several reporters noted the sharply higher prices seen this week. Grain harvest is still in full swing, so not a lot of farmer feeders back in the market yet. Weather swings have yet to end or level off, making verified health programs as valuable as any point in the year. Boxed beef cutouts continue to decline. Choice closed on Friday at 283.27, down 9.09 and select at 262.74, down 2.10 from last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled just over 84k head with live sales mostly 122.00-124.00 and dressed sales 192.00-196.00. Mondays Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 3027 head with a weighted average weight of 544.23 lbs. and price value of 165.73, 5.86 higher than a week ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
