Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to mostly 5.00 lower, expect for the better quality heavy weight load lots of true yearling steers which sold steady to 2.00 higher. The feeder market continues to see a fair amount of pressure from about every direction. Seasonal weather swings always make October a tough month to market calves as health risk is very high and this year seems to be no exception. Supplies at the local auctions have a large percentage of unweaned bawling calves that just don’t do very well this time of year and as a result they are discounted heavily. There was some much needed rain over the weekend in several places, not really enough to add much water to ponds but should give pastures a little boost and green up as well as help to sprout some wheat. Boxed beef cutouts continued to decline and saw the choice fall below 300.00 for the first time since Aug 9th. On Friday choice closed at 292.36, down 10.96 and select closed at 264.94, down 9.59 from the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 90K head. Live sales were mostly reported from 121.00-124.00 and dressed sales 192.00-196.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 2893 head with a weighted average of 540.30 lbs. and a price value of 159.88, 5.85 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
