Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower with the full decline seen on bawling, unweaned steer calves. The supply of feeders was light to moderate with the majority of the offering calves under 600 lbs. Those that are unweaned, without shots seeing the least interest from prospective buyer as most folks just aren’t willing to take on animals with that kind of health risk currently. A few loads of yearling still showing up but much smaller now that fall has arrived. A couple of the top loads from last week was a load of steers at Unionville Livestock Market averaging 827lbs. which sold at 160.75, another load of steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction averaging 737 lbs. sold at 164.00. Local demand is light currently as nearly every combine in the state is in the fields now. Corn harvest is rolling along at a near record pace and some beans have been cut now as well. The weather has been about as good as one could wish for harvest and farmers are taking advantage of that. The forecast in the coming weeks doesn’t seem to show any major events that might slow down progress either. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday. Placements were reported at 102.3, on feed at 98.6, and marketings at 99.6. Overall the report was viewed as bearish as placements and on feed were both larger than expected and marketings were just slightly lower. Negotiated feed lot sales as of the Friday afternoon report was at 62,500 head. Live sales were reported from 123.00-124.00 and dressed sales from 194.00-198.00. Boxed beef cutouts continued to decline this week with choice closing at 303.32, down 11.15 and select at 274.53, down 5.22 for the week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3118 head with a weighted average weight of 555.02 lbs. and a price value of 165.73, 0.04 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
