Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder sold mostly 3.00 to 8.00 lower. The supply of feeders was moderate. A few days of cooler weather brought some cattle to town. Several unweaned bawling calves showing up this week. Demand for these types is light and discounts for these high health risk calves will grow drastically over the next month. Corn harvest is under way now and barns in grain areas will see some attention diverted to harvest for a few weeks now as long as the weather will allow. There are some isolated areas in the state that are pretty dry and would really like to see some water not only to get pastures growing before frost but also to provide some stock water. This isn’t wide spread areas but the areas that are dry are quite concerned. Boxed beef cutouts lost more ground this week. Choice closed on Friday at 314.47, 12.75 lower and select at 279.75, 13.62 lower than the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales for the week totaled near 57k head as of the Friday afternoon report. Live sales were reported mostly 123.00-125.00 and dressed sales mostly at 200.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4298 head with a weighted average weight of 554.88 lbs. and a price value of 165.69, down 3.17 from the previous week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
