Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher and feeder heifers sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy with many load lots of yearlings present at auctions around the state this week. One of the top was sold early in the week at Callaway Livestock Center where a load of 882 lb. steers brought 146.50. High markets weren’t saved only on yearlings however some calves also found much better prices. Mid-week at the Green City Livestock a draft of 42 head steers weighting 497 lbs. sold at 198.25. Buyers holding these types of orders wanted quality cattle and producers have invested to add this type of value. Weather has been difficult and keeping cattle healthy hasn’t been an easy task this year. Although much of north Missouri ended up with several inches of rain causing a lot of crop damage and flooding this past week, prior that that heat dryness across a lot of the state has many fighting flies and dust leading to runny eyes, pink eye and some sore feet. Speaking heavy rain it has been quite the week as areas like St. Joseph received nearly half of their average annual rain fall in a span of just a few days. Damage is still to be determined but no doubt is was extensive. Boxed beef cutouts dropped drastically this week. Choice closed on Friday at 304.55, down 18.72 and Select closed at 276.18 down 7.43 compared to last week. As of the last report Friday afternoon negotiated feedlot sales saw very limited volume for the week with only 45K head reported, although there may have been some additional after hours business. Live sales were reported mostly from 122.00-126.00 and dressed mostly 197.00- 200.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 7645 head with a weighted average weight of 554.49 and a weighted average price of 167.38, up 7.27 compared to last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
