Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 3.00 higher. The supply was moderate with well over half the cattle weighting over 600 lbs. this week and very few under 500 lbs. Demand was moderate to good with the load lots of yearling seeing the most demand which is always the case mid-summer when they are harder to find. One thing of notice lately is the steer/heifer spread that for the last several weeks has gotten pretty wide heavy weights are averaging about 12 back which isn’t too unusual but lighter weights are reaching all the way to 25-30 back in some cases. This typically corrects itself pretty fast but has been the case for a few weeks now. A few sales late week took off prior to the holiday and most early sales this week will remain dark. One of the highlights last week was the Annual Big Bang Video Sale which Joplin Regional Stockyards holds, over 30K head were confirmed sold on Thursday. Many of the northern sales always hold Annual BBQ and Customer Appreciation day sales sometime around the Fourth of July. This past week Unionville Livestock Market held theirs. These types of “special” auctions always attract a few new buyers and markets are usually pretty good. This year was no exception several loads of eight weight steers got in to the mid 150’s. Feedlot sales this week totaled right at 85K as of the last report Friday afternoon. Live sales were reported mostly from 121.25 in the south to 126.00 in the north. Dressed sales were mostly 197.00-198.00. Boxed beef cutouts continue to lose ground which is normal after the 4th of July, choice closed Friday at 285.44 down 19.12 and select closed at 264.41 down 11.77 compared to the previous week. Grain prices shot back up Wednesday as USDA released acreage and stocks reports. Corn and beans were bullish across the board as numbers fell below the low expectations. Wheat numbers were mostly neutral but benefited from some spill over support. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4420 head with a weighted average weight of 554.93 lbs. and a price value of 168.56, 1.18 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
