Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with the most advance noted on 500-650 lb cattle. The supply was light to moderate this week as hay harvest was in full swing as the weather finally gave producers several dry days in a row. Although the heat was good for making hay it was also a factor in limiting transportation of cattle as well. Demand was moderate to good. Grain prices tumbled mid-week both cash and futures providing the some support to the cattle markets. The corn futures were down 0.30 to 0.52 for the week after gaining back a little of the losses. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for the week which is typical after Memorial Day and given that most retail shops likely have their orders made for Fourth of July needs now. Choice closed on Friday at 323.28, down 14.28 and select closed at 283.61, down 21.60 compared to last week. Despite lower cutout values feedlot trade for the week was higher with live sales mostly 122.00 -125.00 and dressed sales mostly at 195.00 although a few late week clean up sales made it up to 200.00, this was after five weeks of trade being at mostly 119.00 and 190.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4339 head with a weighted average weight of 555.58 and a price value of 160.11, 0.90 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
