Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 lower, feeder heifers sold uneven from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy, although heat arrived many farmers had not been able to get into fields to really start haying and added to the fact many barns were closed the previous week it ended up being a quite large weekly run. Demand was moderate although markets continue to be under pressure from high grain cost and many unknowns. Drought conditions in the west is causing a lot of sell offs either unplanned or earlier than usual and now cyber security issues have affected the beef industry. Heifer prices were a bit better in places due mostly to the fact the steer/heifer spread has gotten pretty wide so mostly just a correction. Although still very hot and humid the weather seemed to break from chances of rain every day and farmers went to the fields in full force over the weekend laying down hay, most of the coming week looks dry so there should be many acres of hay put up this week as farmers try to get caught up. Feedlot sales for the week showed good volume as of Friday afternoon a bit over 98k head of negotiated sales which would be the largest weekly number in two months. Prices were mostly steady to slightly firm live sales were reported mostly from 119.00-120.00 with a few late week sales getting up to 122.00, dressed sales were mostly 190.00-191.00 with some late sales reported at 193.00. Boxed beef cutouts dropped just a bit this week choice closed on Friday at 337.56, down 1.42 and select closed at 305.21, down 6.52 from the previous week. Packer margins via cowboy math are estimated to be somewhere around the 1250.00-1300.00 mark now. The only published report that really provides that data is a private source that has been followed by many for many years, but after reliably being published weekly it has seemed to go unpublished or made difficult to impossible to find for a second time period in recent history as packer margins have reached extremely high levels. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 8449 head with a weighted average weight of 550.00 lbs. and a price value of 161.00, 3.43 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
