Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 4.00 lower, except for several load lots of heavier weight yearlings sold mostly in load lots which sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light this week as several early week auctions remained dark for the holiday. Most of the pressure this week came on the heels of the cyberattack to one of the largest processing facilities. Early uncertainty of how wild spread the effects of this would be lead to tumbling cash and futures markets early in the week. By late week though it seemed if the situation was under control and processing was getting back to normal. Grain prices also took front stage as corn jumped higher once again due to dryness both abroad and domestically. Of course some areas like most of Missouri are much to wet and need sunshine for crops so dryness isn’t a nationwide issue. Farmers in the state have been trying to hay but it is proving to be difficult as we have had more than our fair share of rain. Feedlot sales for the week were light due to both the holiday and the prior mentioned disruption to processing. As of Friday afternoon negotiated trade was reported at about 65k head. Live sales were mostly 119.00-120.00 and dressed sales reported mostly from 190.00-191.00. Boxed beef cutouts continued the climb higher with choice closing on Friday at 338.98, up 8.01 and select at 311.73, up 10.83 from the previous week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4468 head with a weighted average weight of 549.68 lbs. and a price value of 164.43, 0.49 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
