Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate a couple of weeks of steady to better markets has encouraged a few more farmers to make the trip to town. Demand for feeders was moderate although a lot of cattle are coming to town shortly after being separated from their mothers and adjustments for those types are being made. Once again several areas of the state seen heavy rains and many rivers are flowing full and several fields have water standing in them. Corn is in great need of some sunshine and better growing weather. Some guys in the southern part of the state have tried to work around rains and get some hay bailed some of it has ended up getting a good washing. Many fields however are still too wet to do much. Feedlot volume for the week as of the last report on Friday was reported at bout 83k head. Live sales were reported from 116.00-120.00 and dressed sales from 189.00-191.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed Choice gained 5.80 for the closing at 330.97 and select was 1.41 lower at 300.90. The Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 7351 head with a weighted average weight of 548.98 and a price value of 164.93, up 2.73 compared to last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
