Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with instances on a few mid-weights pushing 10.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate. A second week of a little better prices at the auctions resulted in a few more calves making a trip to town. Demand for feeders is moderate. Although it’s almost hard to believe as of the last report planting is actually a little ahead of normal. Given that over the last several weeks only three or maybe four days have been suitable for field work it is somewhat surprising that farmers have been able to make so much progress. Many are hoping for some sunshine at this point to get crops growing and to start hay harvest. There has been some hay wrapped but for the most part hay equipment hasn’t moved yet. This upcoming weekend is historically the big weekend for haying to start in the state if weather allows. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday, due to the covid issues last year looking only at year over year comparisons doesn’t really tell much and one has to dig deeper into the actual numbers to learn anything. On feed numbers were 105 percent, placements 127 percent and marketing 133 percent. On feed and placements were about 1 percent below average estimates and marketings were even. Boxed beef cutouts have yet to find any top and keep climbing. Choice closed on Friday at 325.17, up 8.23 and select at 302.31, up 9.12 compared to the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales for the week as of the final report on Friday totaled just under 81K head. Live sales for the week were reported mostly from 118.00-121.00 and dressed sales 188.00-191.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 7280 head with a weighted average weight of 546.59 lbs. and a price value of 162.20, 4.87 higher than the previous week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
