Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate as weather was less than favorable for transporting livestock. Heavy rain fall early in the week, then mid-week snow fell followed by more rains. Flash flooding was a problem in some areas but mud is becoming a much larger problem. Wet cold mud is not the type of weather that producers want trying to keep calves looking good and gaining weight prior to marketing. Several barns in the northern part of the state canceled sales early due to the forecast of snow. Demand for feeders is moderate to good. Buyers are eagerly trying to fill orders for summer grazers before the best ones are gone and supplies get tight. Boxed beef cutouts continue to climb. Choice closed Friday at 233.95 up 11.13 and select closed at 222.70 up 9.36 compared to the previous week. Feedlot sales as of the last report on Friday afternoon totaled just under 55K head of negotiated sales, however it is likely there was more business late Friday but just how much will not be known till mid-morning Monday. Sales that were reported however were much higher as feedlot managers dug in hard trying to get a little big slice of the pie. Live sales were mostly 110.00-113.00 and dressed sales were reported from mostly 174.00-178.00 with some up to 181.00. The semi-annual cattle inventory report was released late Friday afternoon. On the national level most numbers were fairly in line with estimates. The one exception was the number of beef heifers being kept for replacements which came in at 100% of the previous year which was 2% above estimates. Missouri maintained the 3rd spot in the nation for beef cows that have calved but that number was down 2% for a total of 2.035 million head. The 2020 calf crop was estimated at 1.91 million head also down 2% from the previous year. The Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 3953 head with a weighted average weight of 549.97 lbs. with a price value of 155.73 up 4.22 compared to last Monday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
