Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 650 lbs. sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher with spots of 6.00-8.00 higher. Steers over 650 lbs. sold steady to 3.00 higher. Heifers sold mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher with some 500-600 lbs. heifers up to 6.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate and demand was moderate to good with grazing type cattle finding the most interest. Although muddy there was no additional moisture to deal with until very late week and into the weekend. A very strong dose of artic air arrived which will finally freeze the mud up for a while. Although single digits with below zero wind chills are not enjoyable and can be a real pain trying to run feed equipment the cold dry air is much better for feeding and adding weight to cattle than the wet mud. Boxed beef cutout values slowed from the dramatic weekly climbs over the last several weeks. Choice closed on Friday at 234.58, up 0.63 and select closed at 220.79, down 1.91 for the week. As of the last report on Friday afternoon negotiated feedlot sales totaled just under 87k head. Lives sales were reported mostly 112.00-115.00 and dressed sales from 178.00-180.00 with a few loads up to 184.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6195 head with a weighted average weight of 558.12 lbs. and a price value of 157.16, 1.42 higher than last Monday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
