Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeders under 600 lbs. sold unevenly steady to 5.00 lower, feeders over 600 lbs. sold steady to 3.00 higher, with the 600-750 lbs. steers seeing the most strength after a few weeks of being under a lot of pressure. The supply of feeders was moderate, much lower than the last couple of weeks, but that is typical as new marketing year progresses. Demand was moderate to good, already reports of some buyers collecting grazing cattle for summer which comes as no surprise as some expect supplies to tighten in the coming months. Locally individual market trends were very wide this week with instances anywhere from 10.00 lower to other locations seeing spots of up to 10.00 higher. A lot of factors played into these wide ranges, lighter offerings, quality differences, and with all that went on this week markets definitely saw different effects simply by the day of the week. Early week saw a lot of outside influences and uncertainty mostly due to political reasons with the unknowns of what might happen with the presidential transfer of power. Then mid-week markets were more focused on Ag related issues. Weather and harvest in South America caused grain prices tumble. On the futures markets corn closed the week down 0.30-0.34 cents and beans closed 1.00-1.05 lower which made feed cost outlooks much better. On Friday the nearby bean contract lost .58 ½ cents which was the largest one day loss since July 2016. Cattle futures rallied with feeder contracts closing the week 2.68 to 8.33 higher and live cattle 0.50 to 4.32 higher, which pushed the much talked about Apr to 122.52 an eleven month high. The monthly COF report was somewhat of a heartbreaker however, as pre report estimates expected the report to be quite bullish. That failed to materialize though as on feed numbers were reported at 100 percent, placements at 101 well above the average estimate of 97 and even the top of the estimate range of 93-100, and marketings were reported at 101 percent. Although in the short term the report failed to provide numbers that were hoped for it did provide some hope for the coming months as no one believes these continued high numbers can hold out into summer. Next Friday the semi-annual inventory will be released which should support decreased supplies unless USDA finds a lot of stock that most farmers just do not believe exist. Boxed beef cutouts climbed sharply higher, choice closed Friday at 222.82 up 9.90 and select closed at 213.34 up 10.26 both compared to the previous week. Feedlot volume for the week as of the last report on Friday afternoon showed a volume of just over 88k head of negotiated sales. Live sales were reported mostly from 108.00-111.00 and dressed mostly 170.00-173.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 6949 head with a weighted average of 556.61 lbs. and a price value of 151.51, down 0.67 from last Monday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
