Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder calves traded mostly steady to 3.00 lower and yearlings traded steady to 2.00 higher on a very light test. Sales were quite limited, as many barns across the state were closed this week. Hay feeding has started to increase as the chilly weather has settled in and we’re coming off of a dry fall. A few feedlot trades were reported before the holiday. Live sales ranged from 105.00 to 110.00 and dressed from 168.00 to 172.00. For boxed beef, Choice cuts closed on Wednesday at 207.54 and Select closed at 197.93. This is 1.09 lower and 3.66 higher than last Friday, respectively. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 1326 head with a weighted average weight of 555.67 lbs. and a price value of 151.46, 4.50 lower than last Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
