Special Note: ***Beginning January 4, 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), through its Livestock, Poultry and Grain Market News Division (LPGMN), will change the publication date of this report from Friday to Monday. This will provide a true weekly average price (Sunday through Saturday). Currently, LPGMN utilizes cattle auction sales data from Friday through Thursday to compile this report. LPGMN will transition the publication date from Friday to Monday. By changing the publication to Monday, LPGMN will capture additional sales that occur at auctions on Friday afternoons and Saturdays, utilizing sales data from Sunday to Saturday, to capture a true weekly average price for feeder cattle. The updated Livestock Summary will offer customers additional data to use in an evolving and competitive marketplace. You can access feeder cattle summary reports at: www.ams.usda.gov/market-news/feeder-and-replacement-cattle-summary or find a links to all federal and state market reports from Missouri at https://agmarketnews.mo.gov/reports If you would like to learn more about MARS and My Market News, please contact us at Websupport.lpgmn@ams.usda.gov *** Due to the holidays not enough sales to establish a market trend as most auctions were closed over the last week. Supply was light and demand was light to moderate. If winter weather doesn’t complicate transportation next week is historically the largest volume week of the year. Barns and buyers are eager to get back to business after a week or two off. Many farmers use this as well as the fact it is a new tax year to market livestock. As of last Thursday’s reports boxed beef cutouts were mixed. Choice closed up 2.41 at 209.95 and select was down 2.28 at 195.65 compared to Wednesday prior to Christmas. Feedlot sales were higher for the last week of the year. As of Thursday afternoon reported volume was just over 71k head of negotiated sales for the week with some more possibly taking place after hours. Compared to the week prior live sales were reported from 110.00-112.00 which was steady to 4.00 higher and dressed sales from 175.00-176.00 which was 3.00-4.00 higher. Last Thursday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 208 head with a weighted average weight of 554.63 and a price value of 152.62, up 1.16 compared to last Friday.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
