Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. A much lighter offering for what was the last full marketing week of the 2020 year. There was still several larger consignments of reputation cattle at some barns but also a lot of smaller odds and ends as producers took advantage of the last sales for this tax year. Over the next two weeks sales will be limited with barns taking off either one or both holiday weeks. There are several special cow sales over the next two weeks which will give farmers a final opportunity for any financial moves that need to be made. Colder weather spread over the state this week just prior to the official start of winter. There are several farmers feeding hay now as the dry fall prevented much if any stockpiling of grass. The monthly cattle on feed report is due out later Friday afternoon; pre report estimates have placements at 91.8 percent, on feed at 100 percent, and marketings at 97.9 percent of year ago levels. Boxed beef cutouts continued the decline this week but not at the same pace as the previous. Choice closed on Thursday at 209.51, down 4.37 and select at 193.70, down 2.01 compared to last Friday. As of this report just under 54K head of negotiated feedlot sales have been reported. Live sales have ranged from 102.00-108.00 and dressed from 162.00-170.00 mostly near 165.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 5,888 head with a weighted average weight of 549.18 lbs. and a price value of 155.96, 4.10 higher than last Friday

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
