Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 900 lbs mostly steady, over 900 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers were best compared on those weighing over 700 lbs, 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Very good demand again this week as the cash fed cattle market soared to new all-time historically high prices. Long strings of yearlings offered as more auction markets hosted their summertime BBQ special feeder cattle sales. Order buyers are traveling outside their usual areas to attend these big special sales as feeder cattle sales are more sporadic this time of the year. The market was extremely active as the competition was great as cattle producers are very optimistic about the future months in the cattle market as the cash fed cattle continues to greatly outperform the Live Cattle futures. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher, bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
