Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower, heifers 3.00 to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower. Very good demand remains for steers and heifers but with the lower Feeder Cattle futures and the higher corn futures cattle feeders have pumped the brakes and slowed in their pursuit of feeder cattle. Hot weather set in this week, with drought expansion throughout the corn belt as the rain chances never seem to materialize. Packers still had to pay up, 185.00-190.00 to get cattle bought. The dog days of summer have arrived but still the fat market is dollars higher than where the futures contracts are at. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 2.00 lower, bulls 3.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
