Total receipts 9,173 13,358 12,103

Slaughter cattle 1,316 826 988

Compared to last week: Feeder steers uneven, steady to firm except 700-750 lbs and 900-950 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 8.00 higher, instances to 12.00 higher. The feeder cattle market continues to move higher as the cash fed cattle market greatly outpaces the Live Cattle futures. Cash fed cattle at 183.00 this week added further fuel to the fire, creating even greater bullish attitudes amongst cattle producers and feeders. The grazing season has begun and the demand for grass cattle is red hot. More rain in the forecast for the weekend and next week looking to help alleviate the drought. There is great demand for these backgrounded yearlings to feed this summer and the market is extremely active as cattle feeders are willing to compete heavily to get the cattle bought that they need in order to have fed cattle to sell in the fall/early winter months. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 8.00 higher, bulls 2.00 to 4.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
