Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, except 350-400 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 lower, 500-750 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Heifer calves 3.00 to 6.00 lower. Yearling feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady. Good demand for steer and heifer calves but there was some pressure on the market this week just from the sheer volume of calves offered across the northen plains. Very good demand remains for yearling steers and heifers. The cash fed cattle market continues to strengthen, up to 153.00, yet the futures contracts didn't follow along as Dec Live Cattle lost 1.35 to close at 151.65. Cattle feeders are concerned about buying calves too high as feed costs are so much higher than last fall when they placed calves on feed. Corn harvest is complete and farmer feeders are at the auctions ready to buy these long strings of ranch raised calves while they are available. The flesh condition is rather attractive as they are coming off dry, short pastures but without the futures contracts rallying and moving higher they have no reason to bid higher to get calves bought. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 2.00 to 4.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
