Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Steer calves 5.00 to 10.00 lower, except 500-550 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Heifer calves under 600 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, over 600 lbs 7.00 to 8.00 lower. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Good demand this week again for steer and heifer calves but with the winter storm that struck the central part of the state, causing consignment and auction cancellations, some buyers also chose to pull back in their pursuit of calves to feed. The demand for yearlings stays good but with the winter months of the Live Cattle contract failing to advance from their current levels, cattle feeders don't have a reason to want to give more for the feedyard backgrounded yearlings that are coming to town. The flesh on these cattle is much heavier than the ones that came off grass earlier in the fall and cost of gain is a major concern as feed cost are much higher than last Autumn. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower, full decline on the Lean cows, bulls sold with lower undertones.
