Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Steer calves steady to 2.00 lower, except 400-450 lbs 7.00 to 8.00 lower. Heifer calves steady to 3.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady. Good demand for this week's large offering of calves, very good demand remains for yearlings. Large strings of calves are in town at the auctions and farmer feeders have their harvest about wrapped up and have now turned their attention to getting calves bought. The weather remains mild and dry, however the dusty yard conditions can be detrimental to a freshly weaned calf as they travel around the pen bawling for momma and stirring up dust and putting stress on their respiratory system. The market is most active on yearlings, as fewer yearlings are left yet to sell and cattle feeders greatly prefer to feed a yearling who will go right to the bunk and eat compared to a calf that will stand around and bawl. Cash fed cattle sold for 152.00-153.00, few at 154.00, which is really helping to support the feeder cattle market as the cash market retains a positive basis over the futures contracts and continues to pull the futures higher. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower, bulls 5.00 lower.
