Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers sold mostly steady, Holstein steers sold with a higher undertone as the comparison was very narrow. Demand just moderate for this nice offering of high quality grading steers and heifers. Not much premium evident for implant free cattle this week. Many full loads of steers and heifers but packers weren't willing to push the market higher, two way buyers helped to move bids along. Weighing condition was more towards the full side, estimated dressed cost ranged from 295.00-300.00. Slaughter cows rather steady, bulls sold with higher undertones as feeder buyers were active this week and competing heavily with the packer buyers. Slaughter lambs steady to 2.00 higher, light weight non-traditional lambs sold with higher undertones. Slaughter ewes mostly steady, fewer ewes returning to the country this week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
