Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers mostly steady, heifers steady to few instances of 1.00 to 2.00 lower, Holstein steers not well tested for comparison. Moderate to good demand for this offering of high quality grading steers and heifers. The market was fairly active in spite of the extreme pressure the Live Cattle contract was under on Monday. Higher boxed beef values again today helping to add support to the market. Just a few full loads of steers and heifers in the offering, balance part loads and packages. Estimated dressed cost was right around the 295.00 mark. Slaughter cows mostly steady, bulls steady in a very narrow comparison. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, non-traditional weight lambs sold with higher undertones as there was much more interest shown for these lambs than has been seen in recent weeks. Slaughter ewes mostly steady, demand for these ewes only moderate. Much better demand for ewes in good enough shape to go back to the country as there were several buyers on the seats again ready to bid on and buy those ewes.
