Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers 2.00 to 3.00 lower, Holstein steers scarce. Demand only moderate for this nice offering of very attractive, high quality grading steers and heifers. Many full loads and multiple load lots of offer, but with the Live Cattle futures contracts falling hard the first two days of the week packer buyers were determined to buy cattle cheaper. Weighing condition mostly average as there were a lot of cattle hauled in overnight and hides are fairly clean, overall. Estimated dressed cost ranged from 290.00-293.00. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Bulls mostly steady. Slaughter lambs steady to 1.00 higher, non-traditional weight lambs sold with firm undertones. Slaughter ewes mostly steady, with much better demand from buyers to take ewes back to the country as those ewes in good condition sell on a much more active market.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
