Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers steady to 1.00 higher, slaughter heifers 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Holsteins steady to 2.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of eye appealing cattle was moderate. Black hided cattle are in biggest demand. Several lots of no implant cattle this week, nice premium for them. Only a couple lots of 1600 lb cattle. Weighing conditions favorable, as most cattle was hauled in over night. CME Live Cattle closed slightly higher as well as corn. Slaughter cows Breaker and Boner 1.00 to 3.00 higher, Lean steady. Bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison. Slaughter sheep 4.00 to 6.00 lower. Demand for this large offering was moderate. Ewes steady to 5.00 higher. NO SALE NEXT WEEK DUE TO THANKSGIVING WEEK.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
