Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

First reported sale in 3 weeks, recent price comparison not available, higher undertones on all weights of steers and heifers. Very good demand for this very large offering of feeder cattle. The market was very active as the cash fed cattle market set new all-time record high prices last week, up to 201.00. The Live Cattle futures made gains but are about 6.00 under the current cash fed cattle market. Feeder Cattle futures were higher, but can't keep up with the rapidly rising cash feeder cattle markets. Many high quality steers and heifers offered, flesh condition mostly moderate, to moderate plus at times. The weather has been mild, lacking any snow cover which has allowed cattle to stay comfortable and gain easily, which has resulted in some cattle carrying more flesh. The house was full of eager buyers as the strength of cash fed cattle market has cattle feeders in a profitable position on their yearling cattle they placed earlier in the year. A large offering expected again next week as cattle producers continue their winter marketing.
