Feeder cattle 7,167 6,016 4,412

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 800 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 800 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 10.00 to 15.00 higher, instances to 20.00 higher on 550-700 lbs. Very good demand for a very large offering of high quality, attractive steers and heifers, ranging from small packages to consignments of 300 head. The market was incredibly active again this week, as the cash fed cattle market continues to make new all-time record highs, up to 205.00. The sale started early again, buyers were on the seats and ready to chase the market higher. The CME Live and Feeder Cattle contracts did not follow the cash markets, as they posted losses of 1.50, but cattle feeders paid no attention as they remain focused solely on the market fundamentals. Outgoing fed cattle are very profitable and cattle feeders want to refill their pens, as they have great hope this bull run continues.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
