Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: Steer calves under 700 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher, instances to 15.00 to 20.00 higher on 500-550 lbs, over 700 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Heifer calves steady to 5.00 higher, instances to 10.00 higher on 450-500 lbs. Yearling feeder steers 5.00 to 10.00 higher, yearling heifers not well compared. Very good demand for this large offering of steer and heifer calves, many buyers on the seats actively bidding, determined to get cattle bought. Quality varied, but it didn't matter as there were plenty of buyers for all kinds and flesh conditions, all calves sold easily. Very good demand for this large offering of yearlings, including 1 long string of 1,100 steers that were in a moderate to moderate plus flesh condition and really attractive for kind. As cash fed cattle topped at 196.00 cattle feeders paid no attention to the lower cattle futures contracts.
