Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs sharply higher, over 500 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher except 500-550 lbs steady. Heifer calves under 400 lbs sharply higher, 400-550 lbs steady to 5.00 higher, over 550 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling steers and heifers not well compared as weights and flesh conditions didn't match last week, firm undertones. Very good demand for this very large offering of steer and heifer calves, many smaller consignments along with large strings offered in full load lots. The quality of the calves was very attractive. The market was extremely active on these calves as the house was full of eager buyers. The small bunches were just as easy to sell as the big strings. Several big strings of yearling steers and heifers, offered in full loads and multiple load lots, flesh condition moderate plus to heavy. The yearling market was active, but buyers are watching the flesh conditions very closely as breakeven prices are higher than the current values on the CME Live Cattle futures board. Cash fed cattle up to 192.00 in the country last week, has lit a fire under the feeder cattle market.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
