Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale last week: Steers 500 lbs 14.00-15.00 higher, 550 lbs 5.00-6.00 higher. Limited numbers last week for light steers. Steers 800 lbs 4.00 higher, 850 lbs mostly steady to 2.00 higher, 900 lbs 1.00-2.00 higher, 950 lbs 2.00 lower with instances 4.00 lower. Heifers 600 lbs 7.00-12.00 higher, 700 lbs 1.00-2.00 lower, 750 lbs 3.00-4.00 lower, 800 lbs 8.00 higher, 850 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, 900 lbs mostly 4.00 higher. Most of the sale consisted of load lots of mainly yearling cattle, along with plenty of smaller packages offered. Demand was good today, especially on the loads of yearling cattle. Slaughter cows: Not enough Breaker or Boner cows this week for comparison. Lean cows steady. Bulls 4.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
