Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale last week: Limited number of light steers last week. Steers 550 lbs 9.00 higher, 800 lbs 3.00 higher, 850 lbs 12.00 higher with instances sharply higher, 950 lbs 11.00 higher. Heifers 700 lbs 8.00-9.00 lower, 750 lbs 3.00 lower, 800 lbs 1.00 higher, 850 lbs 3.00-4.00 higher, 900 lbs 7.00-8.00 higher. Many load lots of mostly yearlings, along with plenty of smaller strings in the offering today. Demand good throughout the sale. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows steady to 2.00 lower with light numbers today. Boner cows steady to 1.00 higher. Lean cows 3.00 higher. Not enough bulls today for comparison.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
