Compared to last week: Feeder steers 350 lbs, 500 - 600 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, 400 - 500 lbs 2.00 to 8.00 lower, 600 - 800 lbs 5.00 to 9.00 higher, 800 - 850 lbs 1.00 lower, 850 - 950 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 higher except, 400 - 450 lbs 6.00 to 7.00 lower, 700 - 750 lbs 9.00 to 10.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering of green cattle was good. A couple loads of yearlings sold well today. The total offering was a little less than previous weeks, but the quality was high. CME Feeder Cattle and Live Cattle closed higher, with corn plunging lower. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 2.00 to 4.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
