Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 450 lbs sold with much higher undertones, over 450 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower, except 450 - 500 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, 550 - 600 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 lower, 800 - 850 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 450 lbs sold with higher undertones, over 450 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower, except 500 - 550 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Demand for this large offering of green cattle was good. Several large lots of eye appealing cattle sold today. CME Feeder Cattle closed lower, while corn took a jump higher. US inventory of cattle on feed reported up 1 percent from January 1 of last year. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 6.00 to 7.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
