Market comments — USDA reporter

Special note; Next sale will be April 2nd in recognition of Easter. Compared to last weeks sale;;Steer calves 300-350 lbs were sharply higher and 350-500 lbs sold 12.00-20.00 higher with 500-600 lbs being 3.00-5.00 lower. Feeder steers had insufficient numbers last week to compare. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold 13.00 lower and 350-500 lbs were 2.00-10.00 higher while 550-600 lbs sold steady. Feeder heifers had too small numbers last week to compare. Trade was moderately higher on larger numbers with very good demand. Slaughter cows sold steady to 4.00 lower instances 6.00-10.00 higher and slaughter bulls were steady to 4.00 higher instances 10.00 higher..Market was strong with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
