Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale, steer calves 300-400 lbs were 5.00-20.00 higher and 400-500 lbs sold 2.00-7.00 higher while 500-550 lbs were 4.00-8.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-750 lbs sold 5.00 lower. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs were 8.00-22.00 higher while 400-500 lbs sold steady - 6.00 lower and 500-600 lbs were 4.00-12.00 lower. Feeder heifers had insufficient numbers to compare. Trade was moderately lower with good demand on a lower market. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-7.00 lower, instances 2.00-3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls were 5.00 higher instances 3.00 lower. Smaller numbers with excellent buyer attendance..

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
